1870 4 Kyoritsu Hospital was founded.
1873 11 Private Niigata Hospital opened in Igaku-machi.
1874 2 National Niigata Teachers' School was founded.
1876 4 Private Niigata Hospital became Prefectural Hospital.
1877 3 Niigata Teachers' School and Prefectural Niigata School were merged to create Niigata School Teacher Training Course.
1879 7 Prefectural Hospital's Medical Center was reformed and became Niigata Medical School.
1886 12 Niigata School Teacher Training Course became independent as Niigata Prefecture Ordinary Teachers' School.
1898 4 Niigata Prefecture Ordinary Teachers' School became Niigata Prefecture Teachers' School.
1899 4 Niigata Prefecture Teachers' School became Niigata Prefecture First Teachers' School.
1899 4 Niigata Prefecture Second Teachers' School was founded in Takada.
1900 2 Niigata Prefecture Teachers' School for Women was founded in Nagaoka.
1901 3 Niigata Prefecture First Teachers' School became Niigata Prefecture Niigata Teachers' School.
1901 3 Niigata Prefecture Second Teachers' School became Niigata Prefecture Takada Teachers' School.
1906 4 Niigata Prefecture Teachers' School for Women became Niigata Prefecture Nagaoka Teachers' School for Women.
1910 4 National Niigata Medical College was founded.
1919 4 Niigata High School was founded.
1922 4 Niigata Prefectural Agriculture and Supplementary School for Teacher Traning was founded.
1922 4 Niigata Medical University, University Medical Hospital and Department were founded.
1923 12 Nagaoka High School of Technology was founded.
1935 4 Niigata Prefectural Agriculture and Supplementary School for Teacher Traning was renamed as Niigata Prefectural Youth School for Teacher Training.
1940 4 Niigata Prefectural Youth School for Female Teacher Training was founded within Nagaoka Teachers' School for Women.
1943 4 Teachers' School in Niigata and Takada became First and Second Teachers' School respectively.
1944 4 Niigata Prefectural Youth School for Teacher Training was replaced by Niigata Youth Teachers' School.
1945 2 Niigata Prefectural Kamo Agriculture and Forestry School became Niigata Prefectural Agriculture and Forestry Special School.
1949 5 Niigata University composed of six faculties (Humanities, Education, Science, Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture) was founded following the promulgation of the National School Establishment Law.
1951 4 Elementary School, Junior High School, and Kindergarten were established in affiliation with Faculty of Education.
1951 4 Faculty of Agriculture established its experimental farm and forest.
1955 4 Graduate School of Medicine (Doctoral Course) was founded.
1959 4 College of Commerce was founded.
1964 4 Faculty of Liberal Arts was founded.
1965 4 Faculty of Dentistry was founded.
1965 4 Graduate School of Science (Master's Course) was founded.
1966 4 Graduate School of Technology (Master's Course) was founded.
1967 6 Faculty of Dentistry Hospital was founded.
1967 6 Brain Research Institute was founded.
1969 4 Graduate School of Agriculture (Master's Course) was founded.
1972 4 Graduate School of Dentistry (Doctoral Course) was founded.
1974 6 College of Biomedical Technology was founded.
1975 4 Graduate School of Law (Master's Course) was founded.
1976 4 School of Dental Technicians was founded in Faculty of Dentistry.
1977 4 School for Children with Special Needs was established in Faculty of Education.
1977 5 Faculty of Humanities became Faculty of Law and Literature.
1980 4 Faculty of Law and Literature was reorganized into Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Economy.
1981 4 Faculty of Education Nagaoka Branch School was aboloshed.
1982 4 Faculty of Education Takada Branch School was aboloshed.
1983 4 Graduate School of Science and Technology (Doctoral Course) was founded.
1984 4 Graduate School of Education (Master's Course) was founded.
1985 4 Graduate School of Humanities(Master's Course) was founded.
1989 4 Graduate School of Economics (Master's Course) was founded.
1993 4 Graduate School of Modern Society and Culture (3-year Doctoral Course) was founded.
1994 4 Faculty of Liberal Arts was abolished.
1995 4 Graduate School of Science and Technology established a Doctoral Course combining the first 2-year program and the second 3-year program.
1997 3 College of Commerce was abolished.
1998 4 Faculty of Education became Faculty of Education and Human Sciences.
2001 4 Graduate School of Medicine and Graduate School of Dentistry were combined to become Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences.
2003 4 Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences (Master's Course) was founded.
2003 4 Graduate School of Health Sciences (Master's Course) was founded.
2003 4 Hospitals of Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry were combined to become Medical and Dental Hospital.
2003 3 College of Biomedical Technology was abolished.
2004 4 Niigata University became National University Corporation Niigata University.
2004 4 Graduate Schools of Humanities, Law and Economics were reorganized into Graduate School of Modern Society and Culture (First 2-year program of a 5-year Doctoral Course).
2004 4 Law School was founded.
2006 4 Graduate School of Management of Technology was founded.
2007 4 Graduate School of Health Sciences (Doctoral Course) was founded.
2008 4 Faculty of Education and Human Sciences became Faculty of Education.
