Message from the President

Niigata University started the "Program for Developing Young Researchers in an Independent and Competitive Environment" (Tenure Track System) in FY 2009. The objective of this program is the promotion of globally active researchers by aiming at the construction of a global research base. Under this program, we have been able to recruit young researchers who are more than 20 times as competitive. Due to their efforts, research at the university has been revitalized, and the research system itself is favorably on track to become more comprehensive.
Furthermore, in FY 2012, with the adoption of the "Program to Disseminate Tenure Tracking System " successor program, the consistent employment/promotion of distinguished young researchers was made possible, along with the expansion of the tenure track system to include the humanities fields, and university-wide expansion is progressing.
The university also has a support system in place in order to ensure an independent and high-level research environment so that the tenure track teaching staff can demonstrate their individual abilities to the maximum extent possible.
This program has provided new stimulus for the human resources system. It is my belief that it will lead to the betterment of the university as a whole and the reinvigoration of researches, and it is my intention to make the tenure track more enriched and comprehensive. I have great expectations that the young researchers who come up under this program will be active as the people who create the future not only for Niigata University, but also for Japan.
Sugata Takahashi, M.D., Ph.D.
Niigata University President
