Finding a Supervisor

Those wishing to enter Niigata university as a graduate student will need to find a supervisor before they apply. Supervisors can be found using the Niigata University researcher database or ReaD. Once a supervisor from your field of study or closest field of study has been found, please contact them directly by e-mail, etc. When doing so, clearly indicate your field of study, what you wish to research at Niigata University, what you have been studied/researched, and confirm if you can be accepted. (It is recommended that you include a resume (one showing your academic background, majors, Japanese ability and research plan) and a copy of your thesis.) Communication with such a supervisor who agrees to accept you will be required both before and after your time in Japan.

Eligibility for Graduate Programs: Admission for International Applicants for April 2010

This is to explain the general eligibility you are required to have in order to apply for Graduate Schools of Niigata University. As there may be differences and exceptions in requirements depending on the course, please double-check the admission information issued by each graduate program.

Before you make an application, please turn in necessary documents to prove your eligibility, which you can find marked " " in the "List of Necessary Documents" so that we may confirm your eligibility as a graduate applicant. After you obtain
confirmation from us on your eligibility, please send your application fee and files (as marked " " in the "List of Necessary Documents") within the period specified for application.

* As for the Graduate School of Modern Society and Culture (both Master's and Doctorate programs), we will conduct both the eligibility confirmation and admission selection at the same time. If your eligibility does not reach our criteria, we will return your application documents and refund the application fee.

General Eligibility Criteria for Graduate Schools

Master's Programs in Education, Modern Society and Culture, and Science and Technology

An international applicant must be either:

  1. A person who has completed 16 years of formal education, or is expecting to do so by March 2010.
  2. A person who has graduated from a Japanese university, or who is expecting to do so by March 2010.
  3. A person who will have reached 22 years old by Mar. 31, 2010, and whose academic ability we find to be equal to or above that of our undergraduate students through a special prerequisite admission exam.

Doctorate Program in Medical and Dental Sciences

An international applicant must be either:

  1. A person who has completed 18 years of formal school education (the final program must be medical, dental, or veterinary), or who is expecting to do so by March 2010.
  2. A person who has graduated from a Japanese university (the final program must be medical, dental, or veterinary), or who is expecting to do so by March 2010.
  3. A person who will have reached 24 years old by Mar. 31, 2010, and whose academic ability we find to be equal to or above that of students who went though 18 years of formal education in Japan (the final program of this 18 years of formal education must be medical, dental, or veterinary).

Doctorate Programs in Science and Technology, Modern Society and Culture, and Health Sciences

An international applicant must be either:

  1. A person who has an master's degree or professional degree, or who is expecting to obtain either of them by March 2010.
  2. A person who has a degree which is equivalent to our master's degree or professional degree, or who is expecting to obtain either of them by March 2010.
  3. A person who has engaged in research for more than 2 years in universities, laboratories and the like after graduating from university or completing 16 years of formal school education, and whose academic ability we find to be equal to or above that of graduates of our master's program based on his/her research results and the like.
  4. A person who will have reached 24 years old by Mar. 31, 2010, and whose academic ability we find to be equal to or above that of graduates with our master's degree or professional degree through a special prerequisite admission exam.
