Discovery of a new family of glycoside hydrolase.

May 16 2019

A group including Niigata University (Associate Professor Hiroyuki Nakai, Faculty of Agriculture, and Graduate Students, Graduate School of Science and Technology) and Tokyo University of Science (Professor Hayao Taguchi and Junior Associate Professor Masahiro Nakajima, Department of Applied Biological Science, Faculty of Science and Technology) isolated and identified a new eukaryotic endo-β-1,2-Glucanase (SGL) that hydrolyzes β-1,2-glucans, rare polysaccharides in nature. The SGL does not belong to any glycoside hydrolase families so far known, based on its amino acid sequence, function, and 3D structure. Also, its reaction mechanism differs from those of known glycoside hydrolases.
