President USHIKI Visited the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka

On December 11 to 13, 2023, President USHIKI Tatsuo visited the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. The courtesy visit was aimed to strengthen the existing research collaboration and student exchange programs. Discussion with the Vice-Chancellor were followed by meetings with the Deans of various faculties focused on specific future plans.

Established in 1942, the University of Peradeniya is the only national university in Sri Lanka with a large campus near the ancient city of Kandy. It is the Sri Lanka’s leading institution of higher education with eight faculties and four graduate schools.

During this visit President USHIKI paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor MD. LAMAWANSA. They reviewed the status of collaborations between the institutions and expressed satisfaction on the long and active exchanges between two universities, despite the slowdown due to COVID-19. The discussions that followed stressed the need to further strengthen the cooperation between the institutions.

President USHIKI also exchanged views with the Deans of all faculties at a meeting, where positive discussion was made on holding inter-university symposiums in the field of health sciences as well as promoting student and researcher exchanges.

He stated, "The University of Peradeniya is a key partner institution that has the widest range of cooperation in various projects and relationships among our overseas partners. We would like to further deepen exchanges through programs such as the summer medical student exchange program at the Faculty of Medicine."

Niigata University will continue to broaden international collaboration with universities in the Indo-Pacific region, including Sri Lanka.
