President USHIKI Visited Indian Institute of Science (IISc)

On December 18, 2023, President USHIKI Tatsuo paid a courtesy visit to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and exchanged views on further enhancing the student exchange activities and research collaborations between the two institutions.

Indian Institute of Science, established in 1909, is a national university located in the center of the IT city of Bengaluru. The IISc is known for its renowned contribution in science and engineering education and research in India, including the eminent Nobel Laureate Prof. C.V. Raman. In 2023, IISc was ranked at the second position in the Overall category and stood first in Research Institutions category in the Indian engineering university rankings announced by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

The visit to IISc started with a meeting between President USHIKI and Director RANGARAJAN, along with Deputy Director ANIL KUMAR and other senior officials from both Institutions. IISc was introduced by the Dean of International Affairs Prof. Abhishek Singh, while Niigata University Vice President for Research, Prof. SATISH KUMAR explained Niigata University’s distinctive education and research credentials. The meeting also reviewed the present status of activities and discussed the potential for further enhancing the student exchange and research collaborations. Starting 2024, IISc is establishing a new Faculty of Medicine focusing on post graduate studies, along with a university hospital similar in size to Niigata University Medical and Dental hospital. Hence they expressed great interest in Niigata University’s research achievements in the field of medical and dental sciences that were the pride of our long history. Specialized subject fields will be identified in the near future to enhance the research collaborations between the two institutions.

The Faculty of Science, Niigata University is working on the human resources development in field sciences that will play an active role on the international stages, through collaboration and cooperation with universities of India, Sri Lanka, and Australia. The ongoing "Inter-University Exchange Project" in the Indo-Pacific Region by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), is coordinated by Faculty of Science. Niigata University has entrusted IISc to coordinate the activities in India under the able support of Prof. Sajeev Krishnan, who is a Liaison Professor of Niigata University from 2017.

The delegation also visited the Advanced Facility for Microscopy and Microanalysis (AFMM), Centre for Brain Research and some other research centers at the IISc campus, where they observed the state-of-the art facilities, research outputs and entrepreneur initiatives at India’s top research institute. They exchanged opinions with several researchers at the institutes and discussed possibilities of future collaborations. The hectic day of visit ended in a warm and enchanting welcome reception hosted by IISc for the visiting short-term students, as part of the ongoing inter-University student exchange project.

Niigata University will continue to collaborate with top universities in India to further advance our cooperation inducing student and research exchanges.
