A new analytical system for gene expression developed based on plant gametophytes

Aug 23 2019

A research team led by Professor Shuh-ichi Nishikawa of the Faculty of Science and graduate student Dukhyun Hwang at the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Niigata University, and Specially Appointed Associate Professor Yasuhiro Kamei of the National Institute for Basic Biology developed a new method of inducing gene expression in female gametophyte (haploid generation that produces an egg cell) of plants. Using this system, they showed that an evolutionarily conserved nuclear envelope proteins called SUN proteins play a role in the nuclear infusion observed in the plant reproduction process for the first time. The results will be a clue to reveal mechanisms behind the nuclear fusion in the plant reproduction process.
