Niigata University, as a community-based university, works to help maintain a safe and secure community. As part of this effort, our students, faculty and staff participated in a disaster drill of the local community association carried out on Ikarashi Campus on Sunday, June 2.
About 170 people, including the community association members, students, faculty, and staff of Niigata University as well as municipal staff, attended the drill. They confirmed the routes to the evacuation sites during a disaster, underwent smoke training, and studied about AED and first aid.
Thirteen international students from our university participated in this drill, working with Niigata City to pay more attention to disaster prevention and interact with local residents. One international student remarked, "I was surprised when I entered the smoke experience house. It was all white and I could not see ahead of me." Another said, "I learned how to use AED and about first aid, which I rarely have a chance to learn in my country." The students were able to increase their awareness of disaster prevention and simultaneously deepened their relationships with the local residents through this drill.
Niigata University continues to deepen ties with the local community.
