Chinese New Year Party at Niigata University

Jan 28 2020

New Year Party was held by our Chinese students to celebrate Chinese New Year, known as Spring Festival, at Cafeteria #1 on Ikarashi Campus on Monday, January 20. At the venue, beautifully decorated in red, the participants became better acquainted and made New Year's resolution.

The party was organized by the Chinese Students' Association of Niigata University. We have 351 Chinese students enrolled as of November, 2019, and the Association holds the party every year since many Chinese students cannot return to China for the Spring Festival due to their studies. A total of 150 people participated,  including local residents, who always provide support, as well as Consul General Sun Dagang of the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Niigata.

At the party, international students performed songs and dances one after another, and local residents wearing a happi, a traditional Japanese coat, played shamisen, a Japanese stringed instrument, with a powerful sound. The participants appreciated the mixture of cultures and the Chinese students expressed their hope: "We will become a bridge between Japan and China with our experience of studying at Niigata University."
