COVID-19 Financial Support for Students (Updated: Mar. 30, 2021)

Niiigata University provides financial assistance to students who have faced a sudden change of financial circumstances due to the impact of COVID-19. We encourage you to make sure to frequently check the information on how to receive the financial support through Student Web System or e-mails.

1  Niigata University COVID-19 Emergency Student Support Package (Updated: Mar. 29, 2021)

"Niigata University COVID-19 Emergency Student Support Package" is our own new student support  including financial assistance to those students who have been affected by the impact of COVID-19. For details, please visit HERE.
"COVID-19 Emergency Student Support Desk" to help students with the package is now available. Feel free to contact below if you are having difficulties in studying or in finance due to the influence of COVID-19.

2  First-Semester Tuition Exemption for a Sudden Change in Family Finances due to the Impact of COVID-19 (Updated: Mar. 30)

"Tuition Exemption and Payment Defferal Program page" (*Japanese only) has been updated for tuition exemption for the first semester of AY 2021 for a sudden change in family finances due to the impact of COVID-19.

3  Financial Support Provided by Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)

Besides above mentioned, Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) as well as other organizations provide support to those students whose family finances have suddenly changed due to the impact of COVID-19.
Those students who wish to apply for the following types of support, please consult with Student Support Division as the applications will be filed by the university.

1  JASSO Scholarship for a sudden in family's financial circumstances: New Higher Education System Support

Who can apply?
- Undergraduates
    *Japanese and Permanent Resident only.

Types of support available
- Scholarship based on the criteria including household income, and tuition exemption

Those students wishing to apply for JASSO grant-type scholarship due to a sudden change in family finances because of the impact of COVID-19, including death of a person who financially supports family (father or mother in principle), difficulties to work for more than half a year due to accident or illness, unemployment or significantly decreased income, should contact the Scholarship Support Section immediately following the procedure below.
We also accept applications from students who are experiencing a sudden change in family finances due to reasons not related to COVID-19. In that case, however, the decrease in income of the person who financially supports family, including the decrease in income caused by reemployment after unemployment, is not eligible for this scholarship application.

[Procedure]

  1. Please enter "給付奨学金シミュレーション(保護者向け)*(Scholarship Simulation for Parents)" of JASSO's "進学資金シミュレーター*(Study Funds Simulator)", based on the estimated annual income after a sudden change in family finances, and check if you are eligible for the grant-type scholarship.
    (If the reason for the sudden change in family finances is reduced income, enter the expected annual income after the sudden change in family finances; twelve times the amount for one month, and select "Calculate from income, etc." for social insurance premiums.

  2. As a result of "給付奨学金シミュレーション(保護者向け)(Scholarship Simulation for Parents)" when confirming that you are eligible for the scholarship, please contact the Scholarship Support Section by e-mail with writing "reason for a sudden change in family finances" and "who is the person supporting family financially and when the family finances suddenly changed." Please also inform that you want to apply for the scholarship in the e-mail.

JASSO Study Funds Simulator (*Japanese only)

2  JASSO Urgent/Emergency Loan

Who can apply?
- Undergraduates, graduates and School Nurse-Teachers' course students

Types of support available
- Type 1 Scholarship (Urgent Loan) and Type 2 Scholarship (Emergency Loan)

3  Emergency Student Support for Continuing Studies (Updated: Jul. 08)

Who can apply?
- Niigata University students, including special auditing students, etc.

Types of support available
- A cash handout of 100,000 JPY or 200,000 JPY  will be provided to those who cover tuition with resources, such as part-time jobs on their own and face difficulties continuing their studies due to heavy reductions in income from part-time jobs because of the impact of COVID-19.

Others
- Niigata University will recommend the candidates to JASSO.

*The application for the first recommendation was closed on June 10.
  We are accepting applications for the secondary recommendation as follows.
*The application for the second recommendation was closed on July 21.

  • Eligibility: Niigata University students, including special auditing students, etc. However, those who applied for the first recommendation and received benefits are not eligible.

  • Amount of benefits:
    1. 200,000 JPY for students exempt from residence tax
    *Students other than Class I recipients under the New Higher Education Support System are required to submit "Certificate of  exemption from residence tax of the person financially supporting their family" as proof that meets the requirements.
    2. 100,000 JPY for other students

  • Required documents:
    *If you apply via LINE, you don't need to send the documents by post.

    3. Documentation proving you meet the handout criteria

4  JASSO "Emergency Interest-free Loan-type Scholarships"

We will be accepting the application for "Emergency Interest-free Loan-type Scholarships", which provides special loans urgently needed for a fixed period for students who have difficulties continuing to study as a result of dramatic decreases in income from part-time jobs.
