[To all NU Students] Regarding classes, including intensive courses in the third & fourth term of the second semester

Aug 04 2020

Key points

  • Non-face-to-face classes will continue to be held for the third and fourth term of the second semester in principle.
  • Part of classes and exams* will be offered face-to-face .
*The class conduct for respective subjects is to be notified through Student Web System and our website by the end of August.
  • Please make sure to check the conditions for students to observe in order to take face-to-face classes.
  • We encourage you to take fundamental infection control measures, such as wearing a mask and washing hands.

We have gradually resumed our daily life and business based on "New Lifestyle", and Niigata University has also resumed its educational and research activities since a nationwide state of emergency was lifted on May 25. We, however, are still under an unpredictable situation as confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus have been surging again in Tokyo and surrounding areas. Therefore, Niigata University will continue to conduct non-face-to-face classes in principle.
For some classes, educational effectiveness on the curriculum can be reduced unless they are conducted face-to-face. Then we will offer face-to-face classes and exams in the third and fourth term of the second semester, AY 2020, for certain subjects that require face-to-face means, with ensuring thorough infection control measures. Even for these classes, we will minimize the number of face-to-face classes.

We would like you to keep the following in mind and take classes in the third term starting on October 2. Please consult with Student Affairs Office of your Faculty/Graduate School since your intentions and concern as to conducting face-to-face classes will be fully considered.

1. Conditions to observe for students taking face-to-face classes

  • Take your temperature and self-monitor your health twice a day (morning/evening) during the third and fourth term. Check whether you are experiencing some symptoms, such as cough, shortness of breath and fatigue.
  • If you are experiencing some symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath and fatigue, etc.), stay at home. Make sure to inform your class teacher of your symptoms and follow his/her instruction. We have requested our faculty members to give alternative assignment to ensure your learning opportunities.
  • In case your family members, whom you are living with, are experiencing fever, cough, shortness of breath and fatigue, you can take classes with wearing a mask, washing and sanitizing your hands.
  • Record your daily actions including time, place, and company in case you are infected.
  • Practice "New Lifestyle", such as refraining from chatting, avoiding peak-hours, and taking a walk or riding a bike if possible when you commute by public transportation.  For reference: Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare
  • Please be advised to avoid "Three Cs": Closed spaces with poor ventilation, Crowded places with many people nearby, and Close-contact settings such as close-range conversations not only during classes but also before/after classes. On finishing classes, return home and  do your assignments at home as much as possible.
  • If you are compelled to take non-face-to-face classes on campus due to the timetable, you can attend classes in the designated lecture rooms using on-campus WiFi.
  • Make sure to frequently check the notice from your class teacher and follow his/her instruction before/during/after classes as the contents and places of classes vary depending on the subjects.

2.Others

(a)For those students who have moved to Niigata before the start of class from their hometown

  • It is unnecessary to stay at home for two weeks after moving to Niigata from your hometown within Niigata prefecture, and you can attend face-to-face classes and take exams unless you are experiencing cough, fever, shortness of breath and fatigue. It is also unnecessary to inform your class teacher that you have recently moved to Niigata from your hometown.
  • In case you moved to Niigata from other prefectures, you are required to monitor your health for two weeks by taking your temperature and recording all the symptoms of illness. In addition, we ask you to record all activities (when, where, who) you took while you were traveling. (Health Checklist_Self-reporting Travel/Activity Form)

(b)For those students who can not return to Niigata from their hometown before the first class/exam due to the unavoidable circumstances

  • Make sure to contact your class teacher and follow his/her instruction. We have asked our faculty members to ensure your learning opportunities as much as possible by giving alternative assignment.
