Japan-Russia Online Symposium on Medical Education

On Monday, June 21, Niigata University held the “Japan-Russia Online Symposium on Medical Education” in collaboration with Moscow State University in Russia. About 50 people, including faculty members and medical scientists who involve in the nurturing of physicians and doctors in both countries participated in the event, and they introduced topics such as distinctive educational programs as well as the latest research results in the field of medical sciences.

The symposium was organized as a pre-event for “Japan-Russia Scientific Forum,” which will be held by Niigata University in September, where Japanese and Russian researchers in medical sciences will gather together online. The “Japan-Russia Scientific Forum” is positioned as a related event to the “3rd General Meeting of the Association of Japanese and Russian Universities,” which will be held by Niigata University in September. The General Meeting is held regularly as an international event to bring together persons concerned, such as the presidents of major universities in Japan and Russia to strengthen the relationship between two countries. For this year, it is planned to be held online.

At the symposium, a total of 7 presentations were made from Japan and Russia, and each presenter introduced distinctive approaches to medical education as well as the latest examples of medical research in both countries. From Japanese side, there were presentations such as the development of the educational system for general physicians in Niigata University and research activities on radiation disasters at Fukushima Medical University. From Russian side, a variety of reports, including on cell renewal and senescence (Moscow State University) and the history of Japanese-Russian cooperation in the field of medicine (Altai State Medical University) were presented. Japanese and Russian scientists with different specialties had a great opportunity to gather together and share the latest case studies online.

The results of the symposium will be brought to the “Japan-Russia Scientific Forum (medical sciences),” which will be held in September. Based on the exchange of opinions at the symposium, the experts are expected to have fruitful and valuable discussion at the Forum.
