Sado Island Center for Ecological Sustainability Opens

Niigata University integrated three facilities, the Marine Biological Station (Faculty of Science), the Field Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry Division of Sustainable Forestry (Faculty of Agriculture) and the Center for Toki and Ecological Restoration (Institute for Research Promotion), which had been set on Sado Island, and newly established the Sado Island Center for Ecological Sustainability on April 1. Its opening ceremony was held at Sado Toki Fanclub Hall on April 5.

President Takahashi stated at the opening ceremony, "With forests, villages and the ocean, Sado Island enables us to comprehensively study diverse natural environments. We would like to work on educational research in cooperation with Sado City, using this center." A complimentary address by Mayor Miura followed, "We will further strengthen the collaboration of industry, government and academia to make Sado City more vibrant with the power of young university students."

The signboard was then unveiled by Prof. Takahashi, President, Prof. Takahashi, Executive Vice President for Research, Prof. Sakio, the Director of the Center and Mr. Miura, the Mayor of Sado City.

In the future, the center will further enhance and strengthen the framework for coordination and cooperation that had been established at the three facilities. Going beyond accepting Niigata University students, the center will also welcome overseas students for practical training and work to develop new ecological sustainability as a domestic and international joint educational research base.
