Research Institute for Natural Hazards and Disaster Recovery, Niigata University (NU), and Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture signed a partnership agreement on disaster countermeasures on Friday, October 28, 2022.

In Murakami City, the torrential rain triggered by a linear rainband caused flooding damage in urban areas and landslide disaster around the foothills on August 3 and 4, 2022. In addition, the northern part of the city was hit by an earthquake in June 2019. NU’s Research Institute for Natural Hazards and Disaster Recovery has conducted the damage assessments, and has been working to utilize its research results to prevent and mitigate the disasters in local areas. This time, the Institute articulated its collaboration with Murakami city as an agreement, aiming to support and give advice to help the city to recover quickly from the torrential rain disaster in August, and to continue to promote its activities with the city in order to improve the disaster prevention capabilities in local areas.

Based on the agreement, both organizations will exchange their information and knowledge during the normal and disaster situations, and promote the public awareness activities to prevent and mitigate disasters, and contribute to build a resilient society which is highly adaptable to natural disasters.
