Niigata University's student groups from the Faculty of Economics participated in the "Future Leaders Program (FLP): Future Scenarios of Northeast Asia" sponsored by the Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia (ERINA), which has a collaboration agreement with Niigata University. This project is to cultivate and develop future opinion leaders by fostering student wisdom and deepening global interest in the future of Northeast Asia, which has political and social instability along with great economic development potential.

The final screening was held on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at Marine Hall in Toki Messe where five groups from three universities in Niigata Prefecture made their presentations. The students proudly presented their elaborated ideas and confidently answered the judges' pointed questions.

After rigorous screening by the judging committee including people from the Consulate-General in Niigata, the press and government officials, the Niigata Prefectural Governor's Award was given to "The Future of Northeast Asia Connected by the Expo" by the Michigami Seminar group of Niigata University's Faculty of Economics. The Judges' Special Award was given to "Reduction of Marine Plastics by Building a CTS Cycle" by the Hamada Seminar group, which was also from Niigata University's Faculty of Economics.

Niigata University continues to propose solutions for issues related to the East Asian region and contribute to the development of local communities through projects such as developing individuals that work with a global perspective.
