Disaster Prevention Class for International Students Held

October 23, 2026

“Disaster Prevention Class for International Students” was held on October 15 at the Advanced Education and Research Building on Ikarashi Campus with the aim of enhancing disaster preparedness awareness among international students. The class was conducted following its successful implementation last year.

The class welcomed Ms. Chieko Onozuka and Mr. Kazuhiro Komata from the Niigata Branch of the Japan Disaster Prevention Leaders Association as instructors, who provided guidance on disaster preparedness and emergency response. They provided explanations on basic response measures in the event of a disaster, precautions during evacuation, and the preparation of emergency evacuation kits. Through practical activities simulating disasters such as earthquakes and fires, participants learned essential disaster preparedness knowledge for living safely in Japan. Participants also experienced heating emergency packaged rice without using fire by means of heat packs and assembling cardboard beds commonly used in evacuation shelters, which helped them better envision life during a disaster. In addition, the Niigata City International Exchange Foundation introduced the “Multilingual Support Center for Disasters,” helping participants gain a better understanding of the support systems available during emergencies.

Although the class covered content similar to that of the previous year, more than 50 international students participated this year, including many who had newly arrived in Japan. Participants showed strong interest in the lectures and hands-on activities and engaged enthusiastically throughout the program. Feedback from participants included comments such as, “I think this class is very good and beneficial for everyone,” and “I learned how to help people in the event of a disaster.”

Niigata University will continue its efforts in disaster preparedness education and safety measures to ensure that international students can pursue their studies in Japan with confidence and peace of mind.
