Mini Sunflowers Cared for by Students in Full Bloom

Aug 17 2021

The mini sunflowers grown in planters at the main gate of Ikarashi Campus are now in full bloom.

The planters were brought into the campus when the main gate was improved in 2010. The flowers have been replanted twice a year in spring and autumn since then. Students who belong to an environmental club of Niigata University, "Sunflower," choose the types of flower to plant and take care of them throughout the year. They decided by vote to plant mini sunflower for this spring and summer, because the name of the flower is the same as that of the club, and it makes you feel the coming of summer. Since the seedlings were planted in June, they have grown steadily, and are now in full bloom with bright yellow flowers, soaking up the summer sunshine.

With the summer is in full swing, it is essential to water the flowers. Students of the "Sunflower" who are in charge of the flowerbeds take turns to water them in the evening when the sunlight becomes less intense.

The students said: "it has been hot every day, but we hope that people passing by would enjoy having a look at the flowers."

In addition to taking care of the planters at the main gate, they engage in volunteer activities such as collecting plastic bottle caps and cleaning up Ikarashi Beach near the campus. The club has approximately 90 members for the academic year of 2021.
