Harvesting of a new variety of rice tolerant to high temperature has begun

Sep 15 2021

Harvesting of a new variety of rice tolerant to high temperature has begun in Kariwa Village. Prof. MITSUI Toshiaki, Faculty of Agriculture, and his colleagues worked on research and development of the variety for about 20 years. It was registered in March 2020, and has high temperature and high CO2 tolerant, which successfully prevent it from decreasing grain quality and losing yield even in a high temperature environment.

Cooperating with farmers, the professor and his staff are making a test growing and demonstration experiments. This is the second year of cultivation at the paddy fields in Kariwa Village.

Prof. MITSUI said: “The rice has grown well with minimum of lodging, and is now ready for harvesting. Students and research staff harvested it by hand on 10 September. We are going to harvest it with a combine harvester on 16 September, and subject to the evaluation of quality and taste.”
